Over the summer of 2021, two groups of women met at Unity Hubb and Christ Church in Ward End to stitch their own personal samplers.
These artists have come together to stitch their stories and share their own words for an exhibition at Unity Hubb for Birmingham Heritage Week 2021. The work was then exhibited at The Gallery at The Hive in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter during October 2021.
The Our Stories in Stitch project was a brilliant first-time collaboration between Woolly Mammoth Stitch Works CIC, St Margaret’s Community Trust and Christ Church and poet Amerah Saleh.
This project was much more than about stitching. The project was also about recovery, and bringing people together in a safe space, helping them to reconnect socially after the pandemic. We are delighted that two crafting groups – one at Unity Hubb and another at Christ Church continue to meet and flourish beyond the end of our project. The women are now sharing their talents and craft skills with each other and craft in good company every week.
